A Message from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee:

Drug Enforcement Administration Audits

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has authority to audit the activities of faculty members who hold a DEA registration. These audits may include a review of records and logs related to the acquisition, dispensing, storage and disposal of controlled substances as well as security of the materials.
As a reminder to all investigators holding a DEA registration, it is prudent to review the University of Pittsburgh’s controlled substances policy: http://www.rcco.pitt.edu/ControlledDrugs/index.htm. Please make sure that your drug logs are maintained in accordance with the examples that are provided on the website, and that they are always kept up to date.
If a DEA representative provides you with suggested corrections, it would be appreciated if you share this information. Please provide feedback to either the Environmental Health and Safety Office (412-624-9505) or the IACUC Office (412-383-2008). This feedback will be used to refine the University’s controlled substances policy.
If any legal concerns arise during a DEA audit, please contact the Office of General Counsel at 412-624-5674.
