IACUC Email Announcement Jan. 29, 2010
A Message from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee:
Title: Large Animal and Nonhuman Primate Training Update
All Large Animal training modules (including nonhuman primate training) have been updated and are now available online through Internet-Based Studies in Education and Research (ISER) (http://cme.hs.pitt.edu). The new modules contain revised information for all individuals who employ the use of large animals (*see attached chart for species that qualify as large animals) in research or teaching. Therefore, the IACUC has reinstated a three-year recertification requirement for all modules pertaining to large animal use.
- All Investigators and researchers who employ the use large animal models on IACUC protocols must take the new ISER based Large Animal training by July 1, 2010. After July 1, 2010, new IACUC protocol submissions, renewals, and modifications will be held in pending status until all individuals listed on the protocols have satisfied large animal certification or recertification requirements. Note: Recertification will be required every three years thereafter.
- Animal training now includes a general module, plus species-specific modules pertinent to your studies. Therefore, certification will require taking at least two modules, the general module, and then a module for each large-animal species listed on your protocol.
Please review the IACUC Training Modules chart for specific requirements. For questions regarding IACUC training requirements, contact the IACUC (firstname.lastname@example.org / 412-383-1737).
